"From Paterson to Mars" Lecture with NASA's Engineer Jackelynne Silva

"From Paterson to Mars" Lecture with NASA's Engineer Jackelynne Silva

Paterson, New Jersey, Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the Theatre in Passaic County Community College.

PCCC’s auditorium rocked with NASA’s “We’re NASA and we know it,” on the evening of November 20, 2012. NASA’s spoof of LMFAO’s song “I’m Sexy and I Know It” brought the room of nearly 300 attendees to cheers as they viewed the comic music video. The video was the conclusion of Mrs. Jackelynne Silva’s lecture “From Paterson to Mars.”

Mrs. Silva motivated and inspired the room filled with mostly high school and college students from Paterson and Passaic, as she narrated her challenging life journey to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory located in Pasadena California. She provided an engaging presentation featuring pictures of her journey that began as an ESL student in Paterson’s Eastside High School. Furthermore, Mrs. Silva’s highlights took the audience to Spain, Mexico, as well as NASA’s laboratories, as images showed different parts of her life; as a student abroad and as a jet and robotics engineer. Mrs. Jackelynne Silva was so gracious as to bring 3D glasses and NASA exhibits for the audience which made the students feel closer to the exploration on Mars.

At the end of her presentation Mrs. Silva and her husband, an Electric Engineer, spent over 45 minutes answering questions, demonstrating the NASA exhibits and meeting with interested students. A phrase that should echo in the minds of those listening to Mrs. Silva, is her advice: “A School doesn’t make the student; it’s the student who makes the school.”

“We were very pleased with the large turnout of high school and college students; as well as the many teachers, faculty and staff in attendance. Jackelynne’s talk provided a firsthand account of her journey which originated right here in Paterson, NJ, as an East Side High School student. This fact really resonated with our students and we are certain that the motivational talk will encourage them to work hard in their future academic and career goals.” explained Prof. Gonzalo Perez, Director of the STEM Program.
