Associate in Science (A.S.) Degree Program
Program Description and Objectives
This program is for those who plan to pursue a baccalaureate degree in human services, psychology, or social work, and for those seeking entry-level employment in public and private community agencies and institutions involved with the "helping" professions. With an Associate in Science (AS) degree, the graduate is prepared to work as a team member, generally working under the direction of a professional, to provide help to the client.
Students develop competencies in counseling techniques, group work, and community organizations fundamental to human services. The program emphasizes a multi-disciplinary approach that includes courses in psychology, sociology, science, English, mathematics, computer fundamentals, interpersonal communication, history, and diversity.
Program Objectives:
- Apply counseling theories and techniques to guide clients in obtaining their goals and to assist in the change process.
- Implement the theories and skills necessary to be a successful group facilitator.
- Complete a psychosocial assessment and diagnose on five axes of the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)
- Define an agency’s service delivery methods and determine which services meet the needs of the population served by the agency
