Using the Internet (Page 2 of 4)
When to use the Internet
The Internet usually should be a last resort for finding scholarly information, unless your assignment requires you to do so. If it weren't for resources such as online databases and encyclopedias, which are organized pieces of the Internet, scholarly information would be difficult to find on the Web. The time you spend searching the Internet is often better used looking for books or articles.
That said, there are a number of situations when Internet use may be preferable:
- Organizational Information: The Internet is an excellent source for finding information on companies, schools, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations.
- Government Information: Though sometimes difficult to find, there is plenty of federal, state, and local government information on the Web.
- News: Within a few clicks from any search engine you can get the latest news from reputable news organizations.
- Practical Tasks: Things such as finding a bus schedule or shopping often take much longer in "real" life than online.
- Entertainment: No matter what your interest, there is likely a Web site for it, and you don't have to wait for it to be on TV.
