Dalia Condis
Frida Kahlo, 1995
Oil on canvas, 28½" x 40½" Gift of the artist

Dalia Condis has made a comprehensive study, in paint, of famous women in history. In this series of paintings, Condis pays tribute to influential women recognized for their worldwide contributions and leadership.  Among those notable women are: Susan B. Anthony, Indira Gandhi, Golda Meir, Harriet Tubman and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, whose portrait is now in the PCCC Contemporary Art Collection.   Condis uses symbols appropriate to the lives of the women represented in her realistic, often surrealistic portraits.  For example, Frida Kahlo, pictured from the back, holds paint brushes and a typical, expressive self-portrait which faces the viewer.

Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, Dalia Condis studied art in her native city and later received degrees from Montclair State University and from Jersey State University.  She has exhibited her work in Cuba, England, Canada, Spain, France, Saudi Arabia, and the United States.  She also runs an art school in New Jersey.
