In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College is pleased to present QUILTS AND THEIR STORIES, an exhibition of quilts by New Jersey artist LYNN BAGLEY. The exhibit is on view in the Broadway & LRC Galleries from March 3 through April 30, 2005.

The Broadway & LRC Galleries are located at Passaic County Community College, Broadway at Memorial Drive in the downtown historic district of Paterson, New Jersey. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  A reception for the artist will be held in the gallery Saturday, March 12, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Admission to the exhibit and reception is free. The gallery is wheel chair accessible.

Lynn Bagley has enjoyed quilting for 25 years.  About this art form, she says, “quilting has been an art that women, mostly, have used to support each other, provide for their families, release their creative spirits, socialize, and express their principles in a unique way. Current technology offers exciting possibilities in the design and construction of quilts…but it is the meditative calm that envelops me as I hand-stitch a seam that keeps me connected to a past sisterhood and compels me to help preserve this spirit-nurturing craft for the future.”

In 1999, the artist decided to promote literacy by combining her love of children’s books with her love of quilting. She selected the books and sewed quilts to match each one by choosing appropriate prints and patterns, then donated the sets to service centers for distribution. For example, contributions were made to St. Paul’s Literacy Center in Paterson and to Head Start in Newark, New Jersey.

In the current exhibition, Quilts and their Stories, Lynn Bagley’s quilted wall hangings are shown together with the children’s books that were the inspiration for her designs.

Bagley gives presentations and teaches workshops on the art of quilt-making, and she continues to share her quilts with others.
