WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH EXHIBIT
AT PASSAIC COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

In celebration of Women’s History Month the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College is pleased to present IMAGES FROM CHINA, an exhibition of photographs by New Jersey artist LAURA CUEVAS.   The exhibit will be on view in the Broadway & LRC Galleries from March 6 through April 29, 2010.

The Broadway & LRC Galleries are located at Passaic County Community College, Broadway at Memorial Drive in the downtown historic district of Paterson, New Jersey.   Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A reception for the artist will be held in the Broadway Gallery on Thursday, March 11, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.  Admission to the exhibit and reception is free and open to the public.

Laura Cuevas, an artist and art educator, works interchangeably in three basic mediums: digital photography, mixed-media on canvas, and mixed-media on paper.  “It is the process, the journey, and the voyage of discovery that I like, and it really doesn’t matter what tools I use to get there so long as the journey allows me to grow and learn.”  For example, a trip to China resulted in the series of photographs, Images From China, currently on view at Passaic County Community College.  About her “journey,” Cuevas states: “What struck me the most from the moment I stepped off the plane and made my way through Beijing Terminal…was the noise.  It never stopped.  Like bees swarming around its hive; it was a constant buzz.  Most of it came from people moving about…They spoke as they moved in great numbers.  At all hours and they were always moving always talking.  Nothing ever seems to stand still.  The images I’ve selected attempt to find the isolated quiet in the madness of the buzz.”

Based in Montclair, Laura Cuevas is a native of Brooklyn, NY.  She received her B.A. degree from Hunter College, City University and her M.A. in Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Cuevas has exhibited her work at the Paul Robeson Gallery, Rutgers at Newark; the Teresa Maloney Gallery, College of Saint Elizabeth, Morristown; The Pen & Brush Gallery, NYC; The Cradle Project, Albuquerque, NM, among many others.

The artist has been awarded the Geraldine R. Dodge Art Initiative Grant and has been awarded artists’ residencies at the Provincetown Art Centre and the Vermont Studio Center, as well as receiving a grant from The National Gallery in Washington, DC, for “The Narrative Self.”
