Hispanic Heritage Exhibit 2006

September 14, 2006

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage, the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College and Colombianos en Acción are pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by OSCAR JAIMES, GUSTAVO ROJAS, HUGO SANDOVAL, and ISABEL STEINBERG. All are New Jersey artists of Latin American heritage. The exhibit is on view in the Broadway & LRC Galleries from October 2 through November 28, 2006. A reception for the artists will be held in the Broadway Gallery on Thursday, October 12, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

The Broadway & LRC Galleries are located at Passaic County Community College, Broadway at Memorial Drive in the downtown historic district of Paterson, New Jersey. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the reception and exhibit is free.

The four artists of Latin American heritage participating in the exhibition use a wide range of styles, techniques and themes in their paintings. Born in Peru, Oscar Jaimes’s artworks are inspired by the traditional colonial style that originated in Cuzco, Peru in the 18th century. By using a special technique to prepare the canvas, his oil and gold leaf paintings appear centuries old.  Gustavo Rojas, on the other hand, uses the latest computer technology to generate his abstract paintings and digital prints (giclée process). The artist states that he acknowledges his Colombian culture “through symbols, color, form, and space with abstract style, joining the past with the present…”

Also originally from Colombia, Hugo Sandoval is a graphic artist whose colorful, abstract paintings reflect his Latin American heritage. Born in Cuba, Isabel Steinberg is a painter and has worked in Spanish theater in New York. Her abstract, cubist works are filled with symbolic images of birds, fish, and eyes.
