The Passaic County Cultural & Heritage Council at Passaic County Community College is pleased to present DISENGAGEMENT FROM REALITY, large-scale ink paintings by New Jersey artist MEHDI HASHEMI.  The exhibition will be on view in the Broadway & LRC Galleries at Passaic County Community College from November 14 through January 6, 2012.

A reception for the artist will be held in the Broadway Gallery, Thursday, November 17, 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.  Admission to the exhibit and reception is free and open to the public.
The Broadway & LRC Galleries are located at Passaic County Community College, Broadway at Memorial Drive in the downtown historic district of Paterson, New Jersey.   Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In the current exhibition at PCCC, Mehdi Hashemi intends that his paintings imply a sense of “disengagement with reality.” Using a special technique with a variety of inks, oil paint and resin on large panels, he creates an “ecstasy-state of abstraction” which he connects to various human emotions.  He says, “I believe art must have a degree of mystery and emotion, and also be left open for interpretation.  Art happens inside the viewer and in my work I always drive towards something that demands interpretations from the viewer without influence.   Mehdi Hashemi’s ink paintings are visually beautiful, mysterious and thought provoking.  To see more of his work, visit www.MehdiH.com.

Mehdi Hashemi received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from William Paterson University.  He has received many awards for his painting and printmaking, including the Ben and Evelyn Wilson Foundation Scholarship Award in 2008.  Hashemi has exhibited his work at Qualie Art Gallery, Orange, NJ; Café Eclectic, Montclair, NJ; Ben Shahn Galleries, Wayne, NJ; and Paterson Art Walk 2010, Paterson, NJ, among others.
